I hope you have been having a relaxing summer. Hard to believe it’s been two months since we all met up in Ogden for our annual meeting, and I look forward to seeing those of you who will be attending SAA’s annual meeting in Atlanta in a few weeks. In the meantime, I wanted to bring you up to date on a few developments and alert you to a few important dates for fall.
Joint Annual Meeting with NWA in 2017
NWA surveyed its membership and they were in favor of holding a joint meeting with us next year in Boise. We have held our initial planning conference call, and local arrangements chair, Alex Meregaglia, is busy researching hotel and conference space options with his committee (Julia Stringfellow and Gwyn Hervochon). NWA will also appoint members to both the local arrangements and program committees as we move forward. Stay tuned for meeting dates in the near future.
Fall Caucus in Provo – October 14
Save the date for the fall caucus at BYU on Friday, October 14. We are planning a day-long program (tentatively) featuring a morning faculty panel on how different disciplines use Special Collections, as well as a session looking at instruction and use in state, local, and religious archives. Following a lunch break, the afternoon will feature a panel on issues related to born digital material, web archiving and/or digital preservation, after which we’ll break into small groups with the presenters to consider best practices in these areas. More details to follow.
Fall Caucus in Nevada – November 4
Plans are underway for Nevada’s fall caucus in Las Vegas on Friday, November 4. We are working on offering an SAA DAS workshop (Managing Electronic Records) on November 3 at the UNLV Libraries the day before the caucus. Details for the Friday caucus will be forthcoming as soon as plans are finalized.
Newsletter Survey
Melissa Johnson, our wonderful newsletter editor, is planning to send out a brief survey to CIMA members to get their input on what they would like to see in the newsletter and discover ways that it can better serve the membership. We are also hoping to add a regular feature into the newsletter that highlights new members in each issue, and work on standardizing the content for the issues throughout the year. Look out for the survey sometime this summer.
RAAC at SAA’s Annual Meeting
Some of you may not be aware of this, but CIMA is part of the larger Regional Archival Associations Consortium (RAAC) which “provides an official venue for information exchange among the leadership of regional archival organizations, and among the Regionals and the Society of American Archivists. The Group serves as a formal entity for fostering collaboration among the Regionals, and between the Regionals and SAA.”
This year the RAAC will be joining the Society of Georgia Archivists for a symposium focusing on the interests of our nation’s regional organizations. Sessions will focus on advocacy, public awareness, education, disaster planning and recovery, and grant development. This symposium will take place on Tuesday, August 2, in Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with the Society of American Archivists Annual Conference. Don’t forget that CIMA’s own Gordon Daines will be presenting at this symposium on two important collaborative initiatives that began in the western region: the Journal of Western Archives and the Western Round-Up meetings.
CIMA and Twitter
We are investigating setting up an official CIMA Twitter account. All of the other western regional archival associations have Twitter accounts, so council member Liz Zepeda is looking into best practices for setting one up for us and making it sustainable.
